Double Tome Studios I’m reviewing the artwork and working to prioritize the next “Items of Adventure” release. I’ve been bouncing around a bit from idea to idea, with notes started

Welcome to The Alfred Effect Week in Review for the week ending August 16, 2020. Blog News We wrapped our third game session for the Shadowrun 6th World mini-campaign as part of the Tabletop RPG Sampler project. This week we kicked off our playthrough of the Free Seattle scenario and had a blast role-playing through the first few missions. Getting Started with Solitaire Wargames

My very first wargaming purchase was Warzone: Mutant Chronicles back when I was in ninth grade. I had just recently moved to a town that had a dedicated game store, something that was a completely new experience to me. My eyes were naturally drawn to the wall of shelves holding a cornucopia of Games Workshop offerings: Warhammer Fantasy Battle, Warhammer 40k, Necromunda, Epic 40k, Warhammer Quest, and more. I pined over those sets for weeks, but they cost much more than I could afford and just felt out of reach. The store owner noticed my obsession and gradually steered me

Family Game Night – Star Wars: Imperial Assault

This week we kicked off our Star Wars: Imperial Assault campaign for family boardgame night and it was a blast. The heroes managed to complete the initial mission, “Aftermath”, with the last player action of the last turn of the game. Our time spent playing Descent allowed us to get up and running pretty quickly with very little rules review. This is especially helpful for us as our youngest is always more eager to play that to learn new rules, so we were able to dive right in quickly. There are a number of refinements to the basic gameplay and

Family Game Night – Descent: Journeys in the Dark

As my kids have gotten older, they’ve always wanted to try out some of the board games that I’ve picked up over the years. One in particular, Descent: Journeys in the Dark 2nd Edition, has always sparked their imagination as well as being a game that I have long wished to play. The big box full of tiles, miniatures, and cards has always had an allure that even I couldn’t pass up. A few months ago, my wife and I decided the minions were old enough for us to give it a go. And boy has it been a ride.
